The Unusual Feat of Six 6s - A Perfect Over

Today, cricket as a sport has changed a lot. Scoring boundaries has become easier today, still, crossing the ropes 6 times in a row is a rare feat. In the rich history of the sport, this has been achieved only 7 times until this date. The first time this happened was back in 1968 and the latest occurrence was in January, this year itself. Here I have listed the seven occurrences of this batting brilliance.

Sir Garfield Sobers:

Perhaps the greatest all-rounder to play the game, the West Indian became the first player to hit six 6s in an over when he was captaining Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan on August 31, 1968. The man on the receiving end was Welshman, Malcolm Nash for whose career, unfortunately, this was the highlight. Sobers' feat turns out to be the most interesting too because his first 5 hits were clean sixes into the boundary and on the 6th ball he was caught. Luckily, fielder Roger Davis crossed the boundary line with the ball in a hand thus becoming an important element in this part of cricketing history.

Ravi Shastri:

The "Champion of Champions", Ravi Shastri was a bowler who could bat in his initial years of cricket. In addition to this, unlike Sobers, he was a defensive batsman. But on 19th January 1985, 16.5 years after Garfield Sobers' feat, he smashed Baroda's left-arm spinner Tilak Raj for 36 runs in an over while playing for Bombay. Shastri is a very lucky person because, post retirement, he became part of many such historical events from the commentary box.

Herschelle Gibbs:

My Favourite player on the list, Gibbs was destined to achieve this feat someday. He was one of those whose name intimidated opposition bowlers and his impact was similar to that of Hayden on Australia and Sehwag on India.

In world cup 2007, Daan van Bunge along with the Dutch cricket team was on the receiving end of Gibbs’ hammering and this made Gibbs the first cricketer to do it internationally that too in a World Cup game.

Yuvraj Singh:

Perhaps the most memorable moment in India’s T20 cricket history, this event contained a lot of drama. It all started in the inaugural T20 world cup, with Andrew Flintoff having a heated exchange with Yuvraj and ended with a young Stuart Broad paying the price. I will call this the most significant 19th over in T20 International Cricket.
"6 Sixes in an Over", this phrase became immortal and I consider myself fortunate to witness this brilliance live.

As mentioned earlier, Ravi Shastri was the man on the mic when this occurred and who else would have been better to describe the moment. This was also the last time someone hit 6 sixes in international cricket.

Ross Whiteley:

Back to the English domestic cricket where it all started, in July 2017, Ross Whitely from Worcestershire Rapids hit six sixes off Karl Carver from Yorkshire Vikings in a T20 Blast match at Headingley. He was dismissed by David Willey who scored a match-winning 118 from 55 balls wasting all of Whitely’s efforts and won the game for Vikings.

Hazratullah Zazai:

Cricket in Afghanistan has been a blessing for the country as a lot of things have bettered in the country. In October 2018, Zazai, the swashbuckling Afghan made a perfect over off Abdullah Mazari. Even at the international level, the world knows the strengths of Zazai and he’s a key contributor in Afghanistan Cricket’s rise.

Leo Carter:

The latest addition in this list is from New Zealand’s domestic T20 league, Super Smash. Leo Carter scored 70 not out off 29 balls which included 6 sixes in an over for Canterbury Kings in January 2020. He did it against the Northern Knights.

Although for a bowler, he never wants to get hit for 36 in an over but still whenever such occurrences happen, it is a treat for the audience to watch.
