The Coronavirus outbreak is causing all sorts of problems for every person around. Keeping personal hygiene is being strongly recommended by experts and yet we are intelligent enough not to follow those. I was wondering why do doctors and hygiene experts always ask people to use soaps and sanitizers to wash hands and why is bare water not sufficient to stay safe. I read a few articles and watched videos regarding it and here's what I understood.
So, what does soap or sanitizer do?
Starting with the basic concept of science, all organisms comprise of genetic materials, commonly known as DNA and RNA. If we simply it more, these are proteins and lipids. Soaps/sanitizers break the structure of the viruses.
Now, let me start the story.
Viruses contain a fat layer at their ends called lipid envelope. Soaps have a head and tail-like structure (class 7 Science). The head is water-loving, hydrophilic while the tail is oil-loving, oleophilic. the tail portion of the soap molecule attracts the lipids (fats) and breaks the bonds of the virus structure, which is very weak.
Another thing is that soaps are amphiphiles i.e. show dual nature (both hydrophilic and oleophilic). Viruses can be considered as grease balls, therefore we can understand the soap action on viruses. It is easy to understand when we relate a normal detergent action with the effect of soap on the virus.
Now coming to the sanitizers, for effective action of sanitizers on virus removal from hands, the alcohol content should be more than 60%. The science of the cleaning effect is similar to that of soaps, just replace the action of soap molecules with alcohol. Alcohols also disintegrate the protein structure in viruses.
Coming to the point, which of them is better, soap or sanitizer?
Soaps are better when the dirt/impurity is visible which can't be achieved when using sanitizer (use your common sense to understand that).
Since soaps forms lather with water, it covers more portion of the hands making it more effective than sanitizer. Another minus point using sanitizers is that alcohol cannot remove the dead viruses from hands. Although alcohol breaks the protein and lipid bonds, it's prolonged use is not recommended because it is not good for the skin.
Now, the last point, why everyone recommends 20 seconds of handwashing. The reason is that effective soap action and bond breaking requires this amount of time.
That's all Folks!!
